Many of us dream of a kitchen with a kitchen island in. It can be the statement and focal point of the room. It’s a space where we can prepare food while chatting to the children about their day. An area where families can gather in the morning and enjoy breakfast together. It’s a place where you can relax with friends and put the world to right over a glass of wine or two.

An island in your kitchen brings so much to a kitchen which is why they are so popular among homeowners and kitchen designers.

Let us look at some of the more popular kitchen island ideas that could work for your home, your kitchen, and your family.

Your island does not have to be all the same level. Think about how you are going to use your island, is there going to be seating area, if so, would you prefer it to be table height or even bar height? Maybe you would like to add some low-level seating that would also double as storage for your children’s toys or books. How about adding an herb box which is slightly higher than the worktop? This would make a great feature & free up space in your cabinets.

The best place for all your cookery books is in the kitchen. Why not include a cookery bookshelf in your kitchen island? This will ensure that all your favourite recipes are close to hand, whenever you need them. The splash of colour from the cookery books will add personality and life to your kitchen too. This is especially the case in a neutral colour kitchen.

An Extra Fridge

Why not add an extra fridge into your kitchen island? This could be a fridge for your essential breakfast items, so they are close to hand. Alternatively, why not use this fridge for entertaining. This could have olives and nibbles for guests, along with wine and beer. This makes it easy for you to entertain, but also for guests to help themselves while not getting in your way if you are cooking.

Kitchen Island Power

One thing that is often forgotten with kitchen islands is the electricity and power. Make sure you have ample plug sockets on your kitchen island. These can be used for charging up your phone while cooking, powering your laptop when the children are doing their homework in the kitchen or for your kitchen appliances. They don’t need to be on show and can be easily hidden under worktops as an example.

Multi-Use Kitchen Island

Make your kitchen island as multifunctional as possible. It can be a place to eat breakfast together in the morning, but it could also be so much more than that. How about using your island for preparing food? Could you the Hob go on island worktop too? What about a washing up area or just a social area when entertaining guests? Think about the multiple uses for your kitchen island and how they could be bought together in your home.
